Dear Students,

This is to inform you of an important change to the module outline and assessment structure for the Mathematics I module.

In previous semesters, the Mathematics I module was assessed through a Mid-Semester Examination (30%) and a Final Examination (70%). However, following revisions to the module outline, the assessment structure has been updated as follows:

·       Class Test 1 (Before the Mid-Semester Examination): 10% (30 minutes)

·       Mid-Semester Examination: 30% (1 hour)

·       Class Test 2 (After the Mid-Semester Examination): 10% (30 minutes)

·       Final Examination: 50% (2 hours)

Class Test 1

The Class Test 1 will assess the following concepts:

·       Expansion and factorization of algebraic expressions

·       Solving logarithmic expressions and equations using the laws of logarithms

Class Test 2

The Class Test 2 will assess the following concepts:

·       Inequalities: linear, quadratic, and modulus inequalities

·       Straight-line graphs

Mid-Semester Examination

The Mid-Semester Examination will assess the following concepts:

·       Basic calculations involving directed numbers and simplification using BODMAS

·       Indices and simplification using the laws of indices

·       Expansion and factorization of algebraic expressions

·       Logarithms and solving equations using the laws of logarithms

Final Examination

The Final Examination will be comprehensive and will assess the following concepts:

·       Basic calculations involving directed numbers and simplification using BODMAS

·       Indices and simplification using the laws of indices

·       Expansion and factorization of algebraic expressions

·       Logarithms and solving equations using the laws of logarithms

·       Inequalities

·       Graphs: straight-line graphs, quadratic graphs, and circles

Important: Final Examination Requirement

To pass the module, a student must obtain at least 45% in the Final Examination. The Final Examination is mandatory for all students.

Therefore, even if a student obtains more than 45% through the continuous assessment (CA) components, failure to attend the Final Examination will result in an overall fail. Please ensure that you attend all assessment components to avoid any risk of failure and the unnecessary repetition of examinations.

Please ensure that you prepare accordingly and keep up with the updated lecture and tutorial materials.
